King Charles I marched into the House of Commons with 500 soldiers to attempt to capture and arrest the radicals, members of the House of Commons who were against King Charles I. The radicals were accused of treason and King Charles wanted them arrested. By marching into The House of Commons, King Charles started the English Civil War. This war lasted for 7 years and later divided England. Charles formed an army called the Royalists or Cavaliers, who were skilled nobles. He also forced farmers and townspeople to fight for him as well as the Militia. His strategy was to win the early stages because his money would run out and parliament had control of the richer parts of England.

A Puritan named Oliver Cromwell led the New Model Army known as the Roundheads. They were disciplined, religious many resources and men where available to them and they had the Lobster Tail Helmets to protect them.
When the civil war began many people abandoned their jobs to fight in the war, such as people of the parliament. The Presbyterians and Puritans were left in charge but this was a problem because these two groups were in constant conflict with each other. Rump Parliament was created. This was the Puritans who remained after the other members were kicked out. When a rebellion broke out Colonel Pride was sent to drive out the Presbyterians. Known as Prides Purge. |
